How it works

A Practical Path from Question to Understanding

DiskSifter gives you the concepts, diagrams, and instructions to investigate your own storage. Nothing is installed, and your device remains private and under your control.

From broad to specific

Use Evidence to Choose the Next Question

A drive total can lead to a category, a category can lead to a familiar folder, and a folder can lead to individual files. Each step adds context rather than assuming the answer.

A focused storage-learning workflowConceptual sequence.

Explore Your Storage Question

Choose a learning topic that matches what you observe: low available space, a large folder, possible duplicate files, a cluttered Downloads folder, or changing storage totals.

Understand the Methods

Read an explanation of the relevant Windows information, study the illustrative diagrams, and follow a practical guide. Pay attention to what a result can—and cannot—establish.

Apply the Guidance

Use the information on your own computer. Verify file purpose, preserve important backups, and make only changes you understand.

Choose the right level of detail

Begin with a topic page when the terminology or reasoning is unfamiliar. For example, the Folder Size Analysis topic explains parents, children, recursive totals, and double-counting before you open Properties on a real folder.

Use a task-based guide when you are ready to follow a Windows procedure. Related links connect the procedure back to the concept, so you can move between explanation and practice without learning everything at once.

Use examples as models

Every chart, folder tree, and file comparison on this site is an original educational example. Labels identify illustrative data. Substitute your own observations when you apply the method; no visualization is based on information from your device.

Suppose an example shows Videos using 84 GB. The lesson is not that Videos should have a particular size. It demonstrates how to compare sibling folders and then follow the largest relevant branch one level at a time.

Record what you observe

A short note can make a storage review far more useful. Record the date, drive letter, available space, location reviewed, and any context such as a recent video project or an offline cloud folder.

This separates observation from memory and makes later comparisons meaningful. You do not need an automated monitoring service to establish a useful baseline.

Apply guidance with a recoverable plan

Before moving or removing personal files, confirm their purpose and make sure important material has a usable backup. For installed applications, use Windows Settings or the application’s supported management controls instead of deleting program folders.

If a path, file type, or dependency is unfamiliar, pause. A storage review is still successful when it tells you what requires more research.

Ask an individual educational question

The Contact page accepts genuine questions about understanding a method or organizing a learning approach when enquiries are available. Explain the outcome you want to understand and the Windows information you have already reviewed, without sending sensitive data.

An enquiry is reviewed as a request for information. It does not automatically create an appointment, paid engagement, training relationship, or guarantee of a response.
