Straight Answers About Storage Learning
Understand what DiskSifter offers, what the website cannot do, and how to approach common Windows storage questions.
What is DiskSifter?
DiskSifter is an independent educational website offering practical explanations and guides about Windows disk space, folder sizes, file review, organization, and storage trends.
Does DiskSifter scan my computer?
No. The website does not access, scan, monitor, optimize, clean, or modify your computer. Example data shown in diagrams is fictional.
Is DiskSifter a downloadable application?
No. DiskSifter does not develop, distribute, sell, or license disk-analysis software. The learning resources are read and applied by you.
Can DiskSifter delete files from my computer?
No. DiskSifter has no access to your files and cannot delete anything. File-management decisions and actions remain entirely on your device.
How can I identify large files?
In a known personal folder, use File Explorer’s Details view and sort by the Size column. You can also use File Explorer search and size filters where available. Review the path, type, date, and purpose of each result before taking action.
How can I understand folder sizes?
Open a folder’s Properties and allow Windows to calculate its contents. A parent folder includes everything in its child folders, so compare folders at the same level and avoid double-counting parent and child totals.
Can files with the same name have different contents?
Yes. A name is only a label. Different revisions can share a name, while identical data can have different names. Compare sizes and content, and use a cryptographic hash when byte-level confirmation is appropriate.
How can I track storage growth?
Record total and available space on a consistent schedule, along with a small set of relevant category or folder totals. Compare the same locations and methods over time, and add notes about major activity.
Do I need special software to follow the guides?
Most guides rely on built-in Windows features such as File Explorer and Settings. One advanced duplicate-verification method uses PowerShell’s built-in Get-FileHash command. DiskSifter does not provide software.
Can I request individual guidance?
You may submit a genuine educational enquiry about a concept or method. Avoid including passwords, confidential documents, product keys, or other sensitive information.
Does submitting an enquiry confirm a training session?
No. A form submission is only an enquiry. It does not create a booking, paid engagement, or confirmed appointment, and it does not guarantee availability or a response.
Is DiskSifter affiliated with Microsoft?
No. DiskSifter is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. Windows and Microsoft names are used only to identify the platform and its features.
Why can Size and Size on disk be different?
Size describes the file data. Size on disk reflects how storage is allocated and can also be affected by compression or sparse-file behavior. Neither value alone tells you whether the file is needed.
Why do Windows storage categories not match my folder totals exactly?
Categories and folders organize information differently. A category can combine files from several locations, while a folder view follows physical paths. Calculation timing, permissions, cloud placeholders, and system-managed data can also affect comparisons.
Why does a folder’s Properties calculation take time?
File Explorer must enumerate accessible files and nested folders to calculate a recursive total. A large hierarchy, slow external storage, cloud content, permissions, or files in use can make that process slower or incomplete.
What does a matching SHA-256 hash tell me?
Matching SHA-256 values are extremely strong evidence that two files contain the same data. The match does not tell you why each copy exists or whether a backup, project, or synchronization workflow still needs both locations.
Do online-only cloud files use local disk space?
Online-only placeholders generally use very little local storage until their contents are downloaded. Files marked to remain available offline occupy local space. Exact wording and behavior depend on the configured cloud service.
How much free space should I keep?
There is no single percentage that fits every computer. Windows updates, applications, working files, and your recovery plans all need room. Watch for persistent low-space warnings and compare your available space with the size of the work you expect to perform.
